10 Things to Know about Croatia Gulet Holidays

The world of travel is now gradually inducting Croatia gulet holidays as a top ranking destination of sea adventure holidays. For the last ten years Croatia has evolved into a leading destination for sea fairing holidaymakers and the trend is growing. So what are Croatia gulet holidays all about? Why are they becoming increasingly popular as a global destination? The following are ten things to know about Croatia gulet holidays.

First, to charter an affordable Croatia gulet the cost will factor in several arrangements. In the final analysis the cost will be a sum of the company charter fee, the obligatory fee, the food arrangement charges, beverages arrangement charges, delivery fee if applicable and extra host costs if applicable. This means that you can bargain and tailor-make the cost of your cruise yourself depending on the amount you have to spend.

Secondly, all the leisure equipment and facilities installed in a gulet are at your disposal. Modern Croatia gulet ships are packed with a host of recreational equipment and are charged as part of the package. Thirdly, most Croatia gulet companies allow you to alter the itinerary if you are interested in something that was not factored in during the booking. You can change your charter arrangement any time you want as long as the weather allows.

Fourthly, you can bring your own drinks aboard the gulet if you prefer to. Some Croatia gulet companies however impose some form of limitation on the foods and drink you can bring on board from outside. Croatia gulet voyages can be facilitated by a tour guide if you so desire, something which must be communicated at the time of reserving the charter.

All cabins in a gulet are self contained and you have your private shower and bathroom which is not accessible to any of the crew members. Fact seven, pets are usually not allowed on board a yacht due to the unfavorable and confined environment. If however you want to bring your pet along agree with the Croatia gulet charter company concerned since they can always make exceptions.

The Croatian climate is ideal for casual attire so ensure that you pack your shorts, bathing suit, T-shirts and other comfortable and cool clothing. Do not carry a lot of luggage though; a cruise needs only but a light pack of changing clothes. You do not need to pay for gulet insurance charges since the gulet is already insured by its owner. The insurance you need is one against personal harm in case of a mishap.

Finally, once you negotiate and agree on a Croatia gulet charter, ensure that everything is put down in writing and signed into a contract some weeks before the cruise. It is always wise to have a tangible agreement in case complications develop thereafter.

When you become a ball person you have the opportunity to be involved in a tennis match, you will be able to interact with the legends of the game, and if you observe keenly, you might also learn a few tricks to win a match.

How to Become a Ball Boy/Girl?

I have divided this section into 2 parts. The first part will tell you what you should have to become a good ball person, and the second part will tell you what you should do to become a ball boy/girl.

Essentials to Become a Ball Boy/Girl
Becoming a ball person is easy, if you have the following:

If you do not love tennis, then you might get bored with your work after a few matches. You are not going to earn much, so when your job schedule turns out to be tiring, the only thing that will motivate you will be your love for the game of tennis. To become a successful ball boy/girl you should have a strong liking for the game, without it all your efforts to become a ball person are futile.

Understanding about the Game
If you do not understand the game of tennis, you will not be able to figure out what is happening on the court. If you have a good understanding about the game, you will know how to act during a match. You should know all the regulations, and the terms in tennis, to be a good ball person.

Knowledge about Your Job
What does a ball boy/girl do? You should have a complete knowledge about the tasks which you will be performing as a ball person. There is more to a ball person than retrieving the ball. Knowing your job description will help you prepare mentally and physically for your job.

Physical Fitness
You might have great love for the game, and you might have a good understanding about it, but if you are not physically fit, you will not be able to serve as a ball boy/girl, as this job is physically demanding. You will have to run up and down the court several times during a match, and there will be numerous matches in day, so if you are not physically fit you will not be able to do your job efficiently.

Time for the Tournament
The tourney will obviously last for several weeks, so you will be completely busy during these weeks. If you have some other engagements (like exams, appointments, etc.), then you might not be able to serve till the end of the tournament. Make sure that you will have enough time for the tourney before you think of applying for the vacancy of a ball person.

Things to be Done to Become a Ball Person
If you have the essentials mentioned above, you should:

Check for Advertisements and Apply
A few months before every tourney, the organizers look for able ball persons. They might advertise the vacancy for the ball persons using the newspapers, radio, Internet, etc. You should constantly keep looking for such advertisements. If you are interested in any tournament, you should apply immediately (as the vacancies will be limited).

Attend the Training Program
Generally, if you want to be a part of a major tournament, you will have to attend a training program. You will have to perform really well in the program, as your performance will be evaluated at the end of your training, and you will be selected for the tournament only if you have a good score. After you are selected, you will get an invitation to the tourney.

Being a ball person will be fun, as you will be in proximity to your favorite stars, and if you serve in a major tournament, you will surely have lots of things to brag about throughout the rest of your life.

How to Get Better at Shot Put

One common problem with track sports is deception. They can look a lot easier than they actually are. That causes a lot of frustration for athletes. The reasons for this are wide, ranging from bad technique to a weaker physique. When I say weaker physique, I don't mean a weaker body. Each sport relies more on a particular set of muscles and you need to build those sets to get better. This article concentrates on what you can do after you get the basics of shot put.

Areas of Improvement

This is a set of things that you need to get better at, just after or during the beginners stage. What can happen sometimes is that to learn the basics, you may forget a certain aspect of the game. Find out what you're missing out on and strengthen yourself in that area. If you're new to shot put, take a look at the rules and regulations of shot put.

Stance
There are two ways to shot put- the more commonly used and simpler glide technique and the complicated but effective rotational technique. You should get better at gliding first, then work at your spin.

Better Technique and Form
The form remains the most important thing about shot put. A better form gives you the biggest advantage on the field. This comes to you even if you don't have as much strength as half the athletes out there.
  • When you pick up the ball, make sure it rests on the lower end of your fingers, where they meet the palm. The ball should not rest in the palm, just the fingers.
  • Plant the ball between the neck and the shoulder. Don't lose grip on the ball, hold it tightly with your fingers.
  • Stand at the back of the circle if you're gliding. Put your weight on your stronger leg and start to arch back. As you do, lift your weaker leg up to counter-balance the weight of your upper body on the leg.
  • Lift your body up by pushing down on the weaker leg. Your upper body should rotate around the body center. When your shoulders are the furthest from the ground, spring your throwing hand outwards. Start from the elbows and push using the shoulders.
  • Release the ball the moment your hand is completely outstretched. Use your fingers and wrist to get that extra push on the ball. Note that upon release, the hand, arm and fingers are straight.
  • The best shot angle is about 37 to 40 degrees.
Better Workouts
It is a common misconception that shot put uses only the muscles of the hands and the shoulders. Shot put actually requires a lot more muscle groups than just the two. The main group is the core muscles. As explained before, you need to follow a flow of motion in your body to get the best distance on the shot. That's why you need to train your entire body for it.
  • The important muscles still remain the hands and the shoulders. Work on them like you normally do.
  • You also need to concentrate on your legs, especially your calves. Your legs are from where your movement starts when you take the shot. If they are not strong enough, you just won't get a powerful lift on your body.
  • The next comes your chest and abdomen. Your abs transfer strength from your leg muscles to your chest, which pushes the shoulder and arm.
  • An important thing to understand is that shot put is only about impulse strength. To get the best burst from all your muscle sets, they need to be as limber as possible. This will help to get a faster coil and uncoil action from them, giving you an edge over the other athletes.
  • Incorporate failure sets in your workouts. They are generally the 4th or the 5th set in a workout session, where you pause and then continue. If you complete the failure set without any difficulties, increase the weights on your next set.
You can identify your own strengths and weaknesses and the way your body reacts to an action. Once you attain the right form, the next step would be to know your own body better. This will help you come up with a style that's unique. Do that right and consider yourself a good shot put athlete.

Preventing Extreme Sports Injuries

Extreme sports are completely different from other sports because the level of physical exertion and speed is higher than that in traditional sports. Dangerous stunts are also a major part of extreme sports which are responsible, to a great extent, for serious injuries. In traditional sports, injuries are less frequent and minor as compared to extreme sports where injuries are frequent as well as major. In traditional sports, when a person acquires basic skills essential for that sport, there are less chances of injury as the level of danger is lower. On the contrary, in an extreme sport, although a person is highly skilled, the chances of an accident resulting in an injury are more and they remain constant because the level of risk is always high. Before moving on to the prevention of extreme sports injuries, we should know which are the sports that are extreme by nature.

Types of Extreme Sports

Which sport is extreme and which is not is a debatable issue, however, there are some sports that can be regarded as extreme sports. In 2004, Joe Tomlinson tried to categorize extreme sports. According to him, sports associated with water, land and air should be termed as extreme sports. Let us take a look at some extreme sports under each category given below:

Water Sports Land Sports Air Sports
  • Wake boarding
  • Scuba diving
  • Speed sailing
  • Jet skiing
  • Power boat racing
  • Open water swimming
  • Cliff diving
  • Free diving
  • BMX (Bicycle Motocross)
  • Mountain boarding
  • Caving
  • Skateboarding
  • Snowboarding
  • Snowmobiling
  • Adventure racing
  • Street luge
  • Sky diving
  • Sky flying
  • Bungee jumping
  • Hang gliding
  • Base jumping
  • Sky surfing
  • Sky jumping
  • Gliding

How to Prevent Extreme Sports Injuries

There are some sports injuries that are common to all extreme sports like strains and sprains, bumps and bruises, fractures and lacerations (a cut in the skin that causes some damage to the living tissue), concussions, etc. One can suffer from an extreme sport injury when he or she tries to perform beyond his/her capacity without realizing its severe consequences. Following are some of the important things to do to prevent extreme sports injuries. However, there are no perfect methods which can assure you 100% safety. But they can definitely minimize the risk of injury and reduce its intensity.

Physical Conditioning
Most people involved in extreme sports do not feel the need for regular exercise and physical conditioning of their body. They feel that practicing their sport regularly is itself enough exercise for their physical maintenance. This leads to a stage where people fond of extreme sports do not take part in those sports as they grow older, because their physical condition does not allow them to do so. They are suffering from so many bad injuries that it becomes impossible for them to bear any more pain. Following are some factors which can help better physical conditioning.

Warming Up
Warm up exercises are very important before beginning any sports practice. It includes a combination of cardiovascular exercises, strength drills and stretching. Cardiovascular exercises increase the body's temperature, the heart rate and blood circulation which is required for further movement of the body. Strength drills increase the stamina of the body, while stretching warms up the muscles, preparing them for sudden forceful movements. Stretching should strictly come after gentle warm up exercises because sudden and jerky stretching, known as ballistic stretching, can cause muscles, ligaments or tendons to tear. Give sufficient time for stretching, as stretching done in a hurry may prove to be inadequate and cause adverse effect. Slow and consistent breathing is required throughout the activity. Along with physical preparation, warming up prepares you mentally to begin a sport, building self-confidence. It also plays an important role in boosting team spirit for a team sport. A warm up session should last for at least 20 minutes and it can extend up to half an hour.

Avoid Overdoing
The term weekend warriors is applicable for people who do not condition their body for the sport on a regular basis and perform a week's task in a day or two. These weekend warriors are more prone to extreme sports injuries as compared to those who practice regularly. They do not realize the effect of overdoing during the performance and keep doing it until they feel extremely tired. Apart from the actual sport, one should also avoid overdoing warm up exercises before the activity. The correct technique is to begin with gentle movements of arms and legs, and then move on to more rigorous ones.

Cool Down Yourself
Just as warming up is essential before any rigorous physical activity, cooling the body after playing a rigorous sport is also a significant part of physical conditioning. When you are done with your sports session, you can conclude with some gentle aerobic steps, walking, jogging or easy running. Slight stretching exercises, focusing on specific muscles, will also be useful for cooling down the body.

Falling Technique to Avoid Injury
Generally, when you are landing after a stunt in any extreme sport, you should bend your knees. Avoid falling in an awkward position where your arms or legs will twist. This will protect your bones and muscles. In case of skateboarding, it is a must how to learn to fall to avoid or minimize the level of injury. Generally, while falling in skateboarding, your body weight falls on your delicate wrists, which can be extremely painful. To avoid this, you should try to keep the bottom of your shoes parallel to the ground and hold your arms tight to the sides to protect your wrists.

Training for a Marathon

People tend to think that running a marathon is impossible. However, if you train yourself properly and also focus on nutrition and overall well-being, it is entirely possible. If you work towards building yourself up to running 26.2 miles, it will be difficult, but you can do it.

Find a Training Program
Marathon training will take up a good portion of your life, especially when you do training runs that go for 20 or more miles. These runs can take hours, and you can expect to be exhausted when you are finished with them, making you useless for the rest of the day. It is important then, to find a training program you can live with. Good training programs scaffold, or build on themselves. You should be running about four days a week, with three shorter runs and one longer run. When you start out, you will be running short runs for three days with a longer run on the fourth. During your training, these shorter runs will get longer, as well as the long runs too. This means that eventually you will be running 20 miles or more on some days. If your training program demands you to run 20 miles on a day you work, you may not be able to accomplish it. Choose a program that works with your schedule, and you will be much more successful.

Treadmill versus Outside
Since you will be running the marathon outside, you will want to do much of your training outside. However, you don’t want to run in the rain because this can ruin your shoes and add unnecessary weight in the form of water on your clothes. It can also be a miserable experience to run very far in the rain. If it's raining, you can combine outdoor running with treadmill running, or run all of it on a treadmill. It’s also possible for you to run the next day, which you must.

Rest Days
Rest days are as important as training days. If you don’t rest, your body will not be able to heal itself and you won’t be able to run for very long. In fact, you can risk injury if you run too much. If you must be active, cross-training such as walking or weightlifting can give you a workout without straining the muscles you need for running.

Nutrition
Proper nutrition is just as important as training. If your body isn’t fueled, you won’t be able to keep going. Carbs and protein are very important, as well as energy bars and other aids while you are running. Be sure to drink sports drinks and water, as you don’t want to dehydrate. Also, eat when you are hungry. Training for a marathon will burn many extra calories, so if you are feeling hungry, you probably need more food than you’re used to eating.

Support of Family and Friends
Never underestimate the support of your family and friends. As you are running, your family is at home carrying out your responsibilities. They will help you cook the food you need and take care of things around the house, while you are training. They will also cheer you on, if you ask them to. Do not forget this; moral support is just as important as anything you could do to train for the event. Be sure to thank those who were there for you. Training for a marathon can be hard on family members too, but it never hurts to show your appreciation.

Bicycle Handlebar Types

The handlebar is a key part of your bicycle as it helps you in maneuvering your bike and also in controlling its speed and direction. Just as there are many types of bicycles available today, a variety of handlebars are on the offer as well. While choosing a bicycle handlebar, you should consider if it is compatible with the make of your bicycle. These handlebars were designed keeping in mind the different riding conditions. While some are meant for use on touring bicycles, others are more apt for racing bikes. Also, the number of grip positions vary and so does the comfort level for long rides.

Types of Bicycle Handlebars

Here's a brief look into the various bicycle handlebar types.

Mountain Handlebars
Mountain Handlebar Also known as straight handlebars, mountain handlebars are perfectly horizontal and are found on mountain bikes, hence the name. Straight handlebars provide better grip and better control, which makes it easy for the rider to steer the bike on rough and unfriendly terrain. Also, better control makes it easier for the rider to take sharp turns smoothly and safely. However, mountain handlebars come with a major drawback: a single hand position, which means you can hold the handle only in the elbow-out position. This can be quite uncomfortable on long rides, and that is why you can ride a bicycle with straight handlebar only for short distances. However, if you wish to, you can overcome the problem of a single grip position by adding vertical attachments called bar ends to both the ends of the handlebar.

Raised Handlebars
Raised handlebars are horizontal at the ends but the central part of the handle is roughly "U-shaped". The handlebar is attached to the steering stem at the center, and is also referred to as an upright handlebar. A raised handlebar gives you two hand positions to choose from: you can either hold the handle close to the "U" at the center or a little farther away from it. Mostly found on hybrid bicycles, raised handlebars do not offer much comfort to the rider. Just like mountain handlebars, raised handlebars are unsuitable for bicycles used for long distance rides. When it comes to the quality of grip and control, raised handlebars are almost at par with their mountain counterparts, making them the second best choice for short distance off-the-road riding. Raised Handlebar

Drop Handlebars
Drop Handlebar The biggest advantage of a drop handlebar is that it offers the rider four different hand positions. Popular for road bikes, drop handlebars are the ones that provide the maximum comfort over long distances. If you look at a drop handlebar, you'll find that it extends outwards before forming an inward curve and appears similar to a ram's horn. Now, if you are wondering which are the four grip positions, then let me tell you that you can grip a drop handlebar close to the steering stem, at the first bend of the handlebar, at the portion extending outwards or at the bottom part of the curve that is pointing towards you. A bicycle with a drop handlebar gives you the advantage of dodging a strong headwind easily by positioning yourself such that your back is bent forward and your head is lowered. Not only this, the different positions offered allows the rider to enjoy a comfortable ride by changing his position depending on the weather conditions or the kind of terrain.

Trekking Handlebars
Trekking handlebars, also known as butterfly handlebars, offer you five different hand positions. Best suited for use on trekking bikes, these handlebars are easier on the shoulder and back, which makes it easier for you to ride long distances. If you look at the picture of a trekking handlebar, you shall see that it forms a C-shaped curve on both sides of the stem. You can grip the handlebar at the four bends and also at its horizontal part. The fact that three of the five hand positions are convenient for a rider sitting in an upright posture, proves to be an advantage as most people tend to sit upright while riding a bicycle. However, if the rider is faced with a situation whereby he has to bend forward while riding (such as on the face of strong winds), the remaining two hand positions offered by the trekking handlebar, will come to his rescue! Trekking Handlebar

Mustache Handlebars
Mustache Handlebar Why are mustache handlebars called so? Well, just look at the image given alongside that shows the top view of one such handlebar, and you'll see that it looks exactly like a mustache! They are similar to the trekking or butterfly handlebars in design and are used in trekking bikes. The mustache handlebar offers four different hand positions. While three of these positions allow you to ride sitting upright, you can grip the vertical end of the bar in case you wish to ride low, in certain situations. Just like trekking handlebars, mustache handlebars are also meant to make long rides easier and more comfortable for the rider.

Cowhorn Handlebars
Also known as pursuit or bullhorn handlebars, the cowhorn handlebars look distinctly different from other types of bicycle handlebars. One look at these handlebars and you are sure to be reminded of bovine horns! So, how does such a design help, you may ask. Originally designed to be used on bicycles meant for track racing, these handlebars are best suited for off-road riding. Normally, a cowhorn handlebar offers the rider three different hand positions. However, if you wish to add to it, you can easily do so by attaching bar-ends to both the ends of the handlebar. Interestingly, you can even construct a cowhorn handlebar yourself, provided your bicycle has a drop handlebar. Just remove the drop handlebar from the steering stem of the bicycle and chop off the drops. Then fix it to the bicycle stem, this time in an upside-down position! Cowhorn handlebars can be used on your touring bicycle as well, if a drop position is not what you need very often. Cowhorn Handlebar

Note that the handlebars will be wrapped in cork or synthetic "bar tape", which are meant to provide you a good grip wherever you choose to put your hands. So, make sure you check out the various types of bicycle handlebars to have that perfect bike!

Psychology Behind Shadow Boxing Exercises

Boxing is a competitive contact sport in which the participants should not only be in great physical shape but should also have a great presence of mind. No wonder boxers have to train so hard. The training regime includes intense workouts where boxers have to work on their general fitness along with boxing-specific movements. The shadow boxing exercises are an integral part of a boxing workout. Unlike a sparring session wherein a boxer attacks or defends against an actual opponent, shadow boxing is a sparring session without an opponent. It is a kind of workout where the boxer tries to simulate a fight. The boxer attacks and defends against an imaginary opponent. The purpose of this technique is to mentally prepare boxers for events where they have to fight very aggressive boxers by the likes of Muhammad Ali. Other boxers who used this boxing technique include Mike Tyson and the late Joe Frazier. Every aspiring boxer knows how helpful this technique is when it comes to overpowering one's opponent in the boxing ring. The use of shadow boxing technique is not just restricted to boxing, it has been incorporated in various styles of martial arts. The famous Hong Kong actor Bruce Lee was also seen practicing shadow boxing in his films. He incorporated this technique in Jeet Kune Do, a form of martial arts that he founded. If you wish to understand the importance of shadow boxing exercises in boxing training, you can go through this write-up on the psychology behind shadow boxing.

How Does Shadow Boxing Help

The psychology behind shadow boxing exercises is to visualize defeating your opponent. Boxing is a sport wherein the boxer needs to be highly motivated. This is a combat sport where one must be physically fit and mentally alert. Training helps the boxers condition themselves, mentally as well as physically. Boxers not only need to have control on their body, they also need to work on their state of mind. A negative self-image can ruin their chances of winning which is why they must have control over their emotions. Under no circumstances should the boxer feel intimidated or appear to be intimidated by the opponent. Imagery is an integral part of boxing training. Boxers must incorporate the method of visualization during the workout session. Shadow boxing as well as punch bag boxing are great methods that can help a boxer improve his/her concentration. It also helps him/her get into a fighting rhythm.

Throwing punches or practicing a sequence of movements repeatedly while maintaining the fighting stance can help the fighter perfect his moves. This definitely improves one's punching speed and is also a great warm-up session for intense boxing-specific workouts. Being a competitive sport, boxers need to create opportunities and land punches that can overpower the opponent. Not only should the boxer have the ability to focus and observe his opponent's body language, he/she should also be able to make the right decisions at the right time. This can come from practice. The imagery or guided visualization during shadow boxing helps the boxer rehearse his strategic moves. To be able to win, one must first think like a winner. Visualizing yourself in the ring and defeating your opponent during these sessions is definitely the best form of motivation.

Shadow Boxing Techniques

To practice shadow boxing exercises, the fighter needs to face a light-colored wall. There is a light source behind the boxer that projects his/her shadow on the wall. The boxer then practices his/her moves and footwork by treating the shadow as his/her opponent or sparring partner. There are two methods that boxers use in the shadow boxing sessions. These are referred to as the short method and the long method. In the long method of shadow boxing, boxers practice straight punches or jabs as they shuffle their feet back and forth. On the other hand, boxers move their body from left to right while practicing short punches or close body shots while practicing the short method. There are a variety of punching techniques that boxers usually use. These include left jab, left straight, right straight, left hook, right hook, uppercut, liver shot, and other shots to the body. Combination drills where you practice a specific combination of some of these punches in a rhythm can certainly help in honing one's boxing skills. Here are some of the common combinations one could try:
  • Left Straight, Right Straight: Here you visualize throwing a punch to the left side of your opponent's head, followed by another punch to the right side.
  • Left Hook, Right Hook, Left Hook: For the Left Hook, bring your left hand near your chin and bend your hand at an angle of 90 degrees while punching your opponent's face with your fist. Follow the same action with the right hand and repeat the action with your left hand again.
One can also graduate from the simple shadow boxing exercises to an intense form of workout. Take for instance, the 10x10 shadow boxing circuit wherein boxers can practice a 10-punch combination ten times within a minute. Besides developing speed and accuracy, one also needs to develop punching power. Once one has perfected these moves, one can attempt them while fighting one's sparring partner.

This was a brief overview on shadow boxing exercises. Shadow boxing is definitely a great technique that prepares a boxer for a fight, mentally as well as physically. A boxer can work on his opponent's weaknesses and try to improve his concentration, speed and punch power. Shadow boxing as a technique can help boxers mentally condition themselves for defeating their opponent.

Every child knows how to play 'Fire on the mountain', isn't it? That is exactly how we're going to play this game. You will need music for the game. After the music starts, children start skating around the rink. As soon as the music stops, the coach shouts out a number, say, 'five'. Then, children need to form groups of five members each. There will be a few children who failed to form a proper group. For example, if there are 20 children, and you ask them to form groups of 3, there will be two children who won't be able to get into any group. These children have to leave the rink, and the game continues. When only 2 children remain, they are declared winners!

2. Hit One!
Our next pick in the innovative game ideas for ice skating is a game that is simple, yet offers a lot of fun. Everyone starts skating around the rink, as fast as they can. The coach closes his eyes, and throws a small plastic ball inside the rink, but towards the children, and not aimed at the empty ground. The child who gets hit by the ball first, leaves the rink. He then comes out and try to hit those in the rink, by closing his eyes and throwing the ball - just as the coach did. This continues till only five children are left, who are declared as the winners. You need to hit the ball as fast as you can. This will ensure that the children don't move out of the way of the ball.

3. Mark the Design
Buy some waterproof markers and draw a design on the rink. You can draw any design of your choice, but make sure the children can trace it, by skating on it. Ask each child to trace this design, and time all the children individually. When everyone is done, find out who traced the design the fastest. Declared that child as the winner of this game. However, if a child traces the design lousily, mark him/her negatively.

4. Ice Baseball
Who doesn't love baseball? We all do, don't we? It is fun to combine one sport with another, and then try to play them both simultaneously. This is our next game. Make two teams and start a game of baseball on the rink. Yes, you will need to change the rules considerably. The penalties will also have to be redrafted. In fact, you can come up with a new game altogether, and surprise the children. The team that wins, gets a prize! If you don't have enough players, to make two big teams, you can play a game of cricket. Here, every child gets a chance to bat, and the child that scores the most number of runs, wins!!

5. Skate and Pass
This game is going to be a tad chaotic, so make sure you have someone to help you look after all the children. You will need music for this game. When the music starts, the children have to start skating in all possible directions, and at considerable speed. Pass them a ball, which they in turn, will pass among themselves. The recipient of the ball has to pass it on as soon as he can, to anyone who comes in front of him. He can hold the ball for more than three seconds. He have to call out the kid's name, and only then can he pass on the ball. The other kid has to receive the ball once his name is called. The child who has the ball when the music is stopped, needs to leave the game. The last three are declared winners.

6. Find the Fruits
This is a fun game, and the kids will surely enjoy playing it! Divide all the children into two groups (A and B) of equal numbers. Make group A stand in a line on one end of the rink. Keep a basket full of fruits on the other end. Each member of Group A will have 5 chits, each bearing the name of a fruit. This means, each chit will have a different fruit name. Group B members will stand near the basket of fruits when the game starts. After the whistle is blown, Group B members will race towards the Group A members, collect a chit, see the name of the fruit, go back to the basket, and get the fruit back to the member they took the chit from. At the same time, they will take another chit and head back to the basket. Once they finish all the chits, the game ends. Exchange the teams and play again. The group that completes the task faster, wins!

7. Mix 'em All
Now here is another interesting ice skating game idea for you to consider. In this game, you need to divide all the children in Group A and B again. Group A will be equipped to play Bandy whereas Group B will be equipped to play Ringette. There will be goal posts on both ends. There will be 10 balls and 10 rings. One team will play Bandy and hit goals with balls, while the other will do the same with rings. The only difference will be in the number of balls and rings, as usually we play these games with only one ball, or one ring. The team that scores its 10 goals at the earliest, wins! If you want to play for a longer time, play five rounds. The group that wins most rounds, wins!

8. Hold an Arm
This is an ice skating game idea for both, kids and adults. Divide the children and form two groups, A and B. Group A will have one member less than Group B. Group A has to stand in a straight line, in the center of the rink. Group B has to wait in a corner of their choice, but together. The children standing in the line, have to keep one hand on the waist, and the other lying straight on the side. However, what you need to keep in mind here, is the alternate hand system. If the first child has his right hand on his waist, then the next one in the line has to hold his waist with the left hand. Once the music starts, the children in the corner will start skating around this line, in a circle. You cannot slow down, or wait in one place till the music is playing. Once the music stops, each member of the group B tries to grab the free hand of the group A member closest to them. They aren't allowed to move behind, they have to move ahead in search of a free hand. The child who doesn't get a hand to grab, needs to leave the game. The game continues on the principles of the 'musical chairs' till there is a winner. You can play this game twice, with the teams exchanging roles. If you don't have music, the coach can say 'start' and 'stop'.

9. Synchronize the Figures
Tired of searching for figure skating games? Read about this game which is specially designed for figure skating fans. Here is one that would certainly interest you! This game can be played at three levels; the basic, the intermediate, and the advance. In the basic form, ask all the children to form groups of three, or pairs of two (if the number of children is less). They need to stand next to each other and hold arms. When the whistle is blown, they need to start skating towards the end of the rink. This will help improve their synchronization skills. The pair/group to reach first, without making mistakes, wins! In the intermediate level, the same groups need to circle the rink, instead of skating straight towards the end. They will be judged on time and efficiency. In the advanced level, the same pairs/groups will need to skate straight, then diagonally, then in a circle. They have to hold arms throughout, till they complete all the figures. Again, they will be judged on the time they required, and the efficiency they displayed.

10. Blind Man's Walk
Divide all the children in pairs. In each pair, one child becomes the volunteer, and the other becomes a guide. Rest of the children have to randomly stand on the rink. Suppose there are two ends to the rink; point A, and point B. The volunteer stands at point A, and the guide stands at point B. The volunteer is then blindfolded by the coach. Once he is blindfolded, all the children shift a little and change the way they were standing. Now, with the help of instructions from the guide, the volunteer has to cross the rink from point A, and reach point B. There will be a new round for each pair, and the children will shift their places, and form new formations for every round. Each pair will be judged on the time they took. Every time the volunteer touches another child by mistake, a penalty of five seconds will be added to his score. The idea is to reach the other end, by following instructions given out by the guide, and that too, by not bumping into any of the child on the way. The pair that takes less time to complete the task wins.

These were some of the most innovative game ideas for ice skating. It is also a good idea to ask the children to come up with more game ideas. So, along with all the ice skating tips and techniques, make these games a mandatory part of your lessons. Every sport workout should have a fun element to it; to make it more interesting, to bring change in the mundane, and to learn it in a way that even learning becomes fun. These games won't only help you while teaching, but also during winter camps and usual get-togethers.

Precautions to Avoid Injuries

There are many advantages of playing different sports, among them is being healthy and fit. Group sports entice a lot of people for it helps to make friends and instills team spirit. Due to the many advantages, it is seen that a number of people have turned towards sports to keep themselves fit, physically and mentally. However, along with reaping benefits of sports, one will also have to take protective measures to reduce the risk of injuries. In this write-up, we will concentrate on preventing injuries while playing soccer. Although physical contact between players is not a planned part of the game, the contact is inevitable during a sport like soccer. The injuries can range from minor to major.

If one has to look at the sports from the spectators point of view, it may not necessarily seem to be a sport where one can be seriously injured. This can be attributed to the fact that there are some players who have mastered the art of gliding through the matches without any physical contact with other players. However, this is true for very few players as most of them have suffered cuts and bruises or have crashed into the ground or have bounced off due to a collision with another player. Hence, safety precautions to be taken while playing soccer have gained immense importance.

Prevention of Soccer Injuries

In soccer, there is a sudden and quick change of direction which leads to contact with the other players. At times, some players can become reckless. Therefore, safety measures have to be in place to protect the player.

Using Protective Gear

The soccer equipment has an important role to play in preventing soccer injuries. If one observes the players when they are on the field, it will be noticed that very few players will have taken the pains to wear the entire set of necessary protective gear. However, to protect oneself from injuries, it makes sense to wear the complete set of protective soccer gear.

Soccer Shoes: Soccer shoes are available in three types, namely molded cleats, ribbed soles, and screw-in cleats. It is recommended that one opts either for molded cleats or ribbed soles. The use of screw-in cleats should be limited and should be used when one is playing in a wet field or on a field with tall grass in it. It is often seen that players do not use the right-sized soccer shoes. Using the right-sized shoes will help in minimizing injuries to a good extent.

Shin Guard: It is seen that shins are the most injured part of the body in a soccer match. The shin guard helps in preventing the common soccer injury, namely the injured shin bone. They protect the legs up to the knees. They can be bought in plastic, rubber, and other forms. Often socks are used to cover the shins which lends necessary protection to the lower legs.

Mouthguard: Other than leg injuries, it is the dental injuries that are commonly seen in soccer. Although it is not mandatory to wear a mouthguard, it is recommended that one wears mouth guards to prevent orofacial injuries. This will also help in protecting the other players from concussions, in case of a collision.

Goalie Gear: Goalies are prone to injuries, therefore, they will have to wear the goalie gear to protect themselves from soccer balls, kicks, collisions, etc. Equipment is also available to protect the wrist, hand, and fingers, which can get severely injured when the goalie is trying to prevent the soccer ball from making its way into the goal post. The clothes a goalie wears should have light padding, so that the other parts of the body are protected as well.

Protecting Yourself and Others

In all the excitement of playing soccer, soccer players often do not inspect the soccer field before taking to it. Making sure the field does not have holes or any other obstacle which can cause injury is important. Obstacles, if any, should be stored away from the field to keep injuries at bay.

The goal post should be well padded to prevent head injuries caused by possible and accidental collision with the post. Although goal posts are firmly entrenched in the ground, it is important to lock the posts so that it does not trip on the players.

It is the duty of the coaches to make sure that all the rules of the game are followed, while the game is being played. At the same time, it is the duty of each player to make sure that he adheres to the rules of the game. It will not only help in preventing injuries to other players but also to oneself. One of the rules followed by most of the leagues is not to use the sliding tackles from behind. This has caused serious injuries in the past, therefore, it has been prohibited.

Care should be taken when one is using heading techniques. There have been many injuries when a player has tried to head the ball and hurt another player in the process. It can also lead to neck injuries due to the impact. Along with head and neck injuries, one has to make sure that one protects the teeth, mouth, and tongue while heading the ball.

Along with taking care when one is heading the ball, one should be careful and avoid head-on collisions. The first precautionary measure that has to be taken is not to charge down the field without paying attention to the position and movements of other players. The next measure is to keep the head up and always be attentive of the players from your team as well as from the opposing team.

Some Essentials Not To Be Overlooked

Now is the time to check the measures that have to be taken to avoid personal injuries during soccer. The first measure that is to be taken is to maintain the fitness levels. If one is not at the optimum fitness level, the chances of injuries rise incredibly. One must have a fitness program in place, which will include aerobic exercise along with strength training. The other aspect of the fitness program is flexibility. If one has not trained in a long time, it is best to increase the training period gradually. This will help in building up the fitness levels.

Stretching is an important part of the fitness regime, which is a 'must do' part of the precautions to be taken when one is playing soccer. However, it is commonly seen that most players do not stretch before as well as after the game. When the muscles are stretched properly, tearing and pulling of ligaments and muscles are prevented. Hence, stretching has to be a part of the warm-up as well as cool-down. However, before you stretch before a practice or a game, it is important that you warm up the muscles a little. If the muscles are cold, it increases the chances of injury manifold.

Dehydration is often the cause of muscles cramps. Therefore, it is important that the player is well hydrated. However, it does not mean that one gulps down huge quantities of water at one go. Water should be consumed by sipping small quantities. Often, dehydration causes cramps. In case of a cramp, it is best that the player leaves the field and comes back only after the cramping feeling has subsided completely.

Following basic soccer ethics will go a long way in preventing soccer injuries. Here is a list of DOs and DON'Ts:
  • Passing negative or personal comments about the players from the opposing team can insinuate a verbal battle, which in turn can turn physical and violent. Hence, it is necessary that one refrains from passing any hurtful comments.
  • Often fights between team members ensue because a particular player does not pay attention to the spirit of the game. At the end of the day, it is important to note that one is after all playing only a game. Avoid cheating in the game. When a match is lost, you will learn from the mistakes, which will help in improving your game to a large extent, rather than cheating and winning the game.
  • As a sports player, each soccer player should have and display sportsman spirit, which is the most important soccer etiquette. This should clearly be evident in case of a defeat. Defeat should be accepted with dignity. It is important that the opponent team is congratulated on their win. While accepting the congratulatory wishes, the winning team members should refrain from taunting the members of the opposing team and remember it is 'just' a game.
  • Players should avoid getting into brawls on the field as well as off the field. Often it is small spats which become ugly. All that happens on the soccer field is best left there itself.
In spite of taking all the required soccer safety precautions, accidents are bound to happen given the nature of the game. Hence, it is important to have first aid kits handy in case of an untoward accident so that the basic treatment can be handed out to the player before he gets proper medical attention. Last but not the least, it is the duty of the players to protect themselves and the other players during the game of soccer and avoid any untoward incident.

Dangers Involved in Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is a very popular winter time activity, especially in North America. Similar to fishing, it involves catching fish with fish hooks and spears by making a hole in the ice on a frozen water body. Traditionally, it was a family activity, but now various ice fishing competitions are held every year and are attended by thousands of budding anglers. This winter pastime is certainly entertaining, but even the best anglers are required to take various precautionary measures before going for ice fishing. This article will educate its readers about the various dangers involved in this activity.

Ice Fishing Dangers

Ice fishing is really not that simple and easy as shown on television. There are various dangers which anglers (fishermen) should be well aware of before they sit for a good catch. Here are some examples:
  • Safety on the ice should be the first concern of any fisherman going for ice fishing. If the ice is too thin or transparent, there is a high chance that the angler and his/her vehicle will fall into the frigid water.
  • The thickness of the ice varies from region to region. Hence, it is recommended to carry a spud or chisel to check its thickness before fishing. The frozen surface should be at least 6 inches thick to support an average person and at least 9 to 10 inches thick to drive a car.
  • Never step on ice that has started melting from the shore. Melting ice is very fragile and incapable of supporting any weight.
  • Never step on small ice areas in an open lake. The waves from the lake can easily break the ice in small areas.
  • People who participate in ice fishing competitions should make sure that they don't dig holes very near a competitor. This can weaken the thickness of the ice which may eventually collapse and put both competitors in danger.
  • Never go ice fishing on a day when strong wind currents are blowing, as these are instrumental in melting ice.
  • Anglers should never drink alcohol while ice fishing. Consuming liquor impairs one's judgment and can result in mishaps during this activity.
Safety Tips for Ice Fishing

Now that readers are aware of the dangers of ice fishing, there are various steps that can be taken to minimize the same. Yes, ice fishing is a scary activity but the possibility of an accident can be minimized if anglers follow some safety regulations.
  • Always have a companion for ice fishing; this is called the Buddy System. This system ensures that there will be someone with the angler in case of an accident.
  • Wear warm jackets in layers and never forget to wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) underneath the coats. In case the ice breaks and you fall in the water, remember to keep your head and shoulders above the water. The chilling water shocks the body and the person experiences difficulty in breathing. In such instances a PFD comes in very handy.
  • Drastic change in weather is very common in cold places. Hence, it is essential to keep oneself updated with the latest weather news to avoid any unpleasant situation.
  • Anglers are advised to wear ice creepers (shoes with spikes) to avoid falls and injuries. These shoes provide better traction and save people from slipping and from getting a broken arm, a sprained ankle or a concussion.
  • Always inform a family member or a friend about your exact location. Inform them which route you will take and to which lake you have gone for fishing. This ensures that someone knows about your exact location and if you don't return in time, they would know where to look.
I hope you are now aware of the various dangers involved in ice fishing and the various safety tips to be followed. To make ice fishing safer, people can go to various ice fishing resorts which provide all the necessary fishing equipment and also take care of your safety.
